The World Fair Trade Day concerns the fair trade, concerns the world, the producers, the consumers, the supporters, the volunteers and those who share the values and the goals to fight against the world poverty. Trade must benefit the weakest. Trade can work for the people air Trade is an efficient and effective response to the poverty, it can contribute to an equitable and sustainable, local and global economic growth. On May 14, 2011 millions of small producers, artisans, farmers and small manufacturers, producers of Fair Trade, traders and consumers will celebrate the World Fair Trade Day. So do we the FAIR TRADE HELLAS by organizing:
- Our summer extreme Bazaar (from 10.00 to 18.30) in Veikou street
- Volunteers training seminar, for old and new volunteers
- A fundraising evening at the Cabaret Voltaire, with the projection of a music documentary about the Fair Trade and a fundraising concert from the upcoming music band The 7 Frogs that will end with a party. We are inviting you to this event of high importance to us and we urge you to forward this message to your friends and bring them with you!

COFFEE & SUGAR MAKET/PRICES

15/01/11

Following our philosophy of responsible consumption we believe that a responsible consumer is an informed consumer. So we feel the need to inform you that there will be unavoidable price increases, especially in our coffee and sugar prices. On top of Vat (FPA) change in Greece, there has been an 18-20% increase in coffee prices globally. This is the first time since 1990 and the reason is a combination of different factors such as climatic disasters, aging of the plants and the financial opportunism, which “helped” diminish high quality products from the markets and resulted in the unpredictable and fast increase of prices.

Obviously the drastic price changes of coffee and brown sugar could not be ignored by our producers. Last December, after negotiations with the producers of the CTM-altromercato group we agreed to split the cost between the involved parties as follows:

- The producers set the price which gives them a decent living and guarantees sustainable production.
- The suppliers and salesmen split one part of the price increase.
- The final price increases the lowest possible so that nobody is affected in the sale chain.

HIGH SCHOOL’ VISITS

15/01/11

Our theme for this year is “Ethical Consumption”. The material and the activities we suggest focus on the violation of human rights – and animal rights - during the production process of some of our favorite foods, as well as environmental consequences.

This popular and delicious topic will keep your interest at its peak: ”Chocolate” ! In the cocoa plantations of Afica young children work under extremely bad working conditions for the production of our favorite and innocent sweet. At the same time, virgin forests are being replaced by cocoa plantations. Our 2 hour educational program is called “The chocolate history through pictures” and we will be very happy to present it to your students. We also have a shorter one hour version if time is pressing.

Moreover, we have prepared a very interesting interactive game called: “A fair chocolate story”. Through this artistic and enjoyable activity children will have the opportunity to perform a research over chocolate and art movements, to work in teams, to express themselves and learn about fair trade and Ethical Consuming. The above activity will soon be available through our website, but we can also send it to you in pdf format by e-mail.

Kindly let us know if your are interested and we will be more than happy to visit your school and present our program at your convenience. Please call us at: 210 3614 070 or e-mail us at volunteers@fairtrade.gr.
